There aren’t many situations where buying a Bugatti isn’t exclusive enough. Apparently this was one of them.

The Bugatti Brouillard has now been handed over to its owner at Château de Chantilly in France, following its public appearance at Chantilly Arts & Elegance. There will never be another one exactly like it because Brouillard is the first creation from Bugatti’s new Programme Solitaire, a modern interpretation of the coachbuilt cars created for wealthy customers during the company’s early years.

Its name comes from Ettore Bugatti’s favorite horse.

That sounds like a wonderfully eccentric starting point for a hypercar, although horses have a surprisingly deep connection with Bugatti history. Ettore was an accomplished horseman, while his father Carlo designed equestrian equipment alongside furniture and decorative objects.

Brouillard translates roughly as “mist,” and the horse that carried the name was known for its white coat covered with subtle grey markings.

The car takes that idea and turns it into metal, carbon fiber and an extraordinary amount of hand finishing.

Underneath sits Bugatti’s familiar 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16, producing 1,600 PS. In that respect, Brouillard belongs to the final chapter of the W16 era rather than the new V16-powered Tourbillon generation.

The body, however, is unique.

Rather than simply changing bumpers and colors, Bugatti has created completely different exterior surfacing around the proven mechanical package. The proportions remain recognizably Bugatti, but the roofline flows into a fixed rear ducktail while the rear bodywork appears much cleaner than on the more aggressively aerodynamic Bolide.

There is even a subtle reference to the horse built into the rear spoiler.

The interior goes considerably further.

Horse motifs appear throughout the cabin, including embroidered representations in the door panels and seats. The gear selector contains a miniature sculpture of Brouillard himself, while green-tinted carbon fiber and custom fabrics were developed specifically for the project.

This could very easily have become ridiculous.

A 1,600-PS hypercar covered in references to someone’s favorite horse sounds like the sort of commission that might test even Bugatti’s ability to keep things tasteful. Yet that’s also where Programme Solitaire becomes interesting.

The customer isn’t merely selecting paint and leather from a larger menu. Bugatti is effectively using an existing engineering platform to create a different automobile around it, much closer to traditional coachbuilding.

And there will not be many.

Bugatti intends Programme Solitaire to produce only a tiny number of cars each year, allowing far more development time to be spent on individual commissions.

Brouillard therefore isn’t really another special edition of an existing Bugatti.

It is closer to what extraordinarily wealthy customers could order from European coachbuilders a century ago, except the starting point now happens to be a 1,600-PS W16 hypercar.

The horse probably wouldn’t have approved of the noise. Ettore Bugatti might have.
